Richard

OK, that was a joke, calling the dog Richard, but I don't know what else to call him.

He loves the junk dog food I bought, Jenny.

He's so sweet - so cold huddled in the garage, wrapped in a towel.

It's a little emotionally difficult for me - I miss my Selma, and I want to know this little guy's story. Why is he suddenly here?

But, roommate needs my help. She peered out, "He doesn't know how to cover himself!" "Um, no, he doesn't have an opposable thumb. He needs your help." [Selma is notorious for spending up to an hour getting her bed Just Right - she uses her teeth and nose and paws and everything - but usually gets me or Susan to take care of it because we do have that opposable thumb benefit.]

So, she went out and I heard, "Up! Up! Up!"
"Maybe he speaks Chinese."
Apparently not, because she kept yelling the same word over.

The poor guy was just so confused about what she wanted.
"Don't all dogs know down and up?"
"Um, well, only if they're taught. Most dogs know down, but I don't know many except mine who know up." [And Selma, of course, is too smart for her own good.]
I knelt down and gently pulled out the towel and sheet from underneath him and wrapped it around him. His eyes immediately closed.

I hope she doesn't think he's stupid. I hope he charms her. He's a really good dog and needs a good home. I'm not sure she's a good home, but maybe I can train her. Training him would be cake. He's quite neat and low-maintenance. He needs to be an indoor dog, and he needs a quiet, safe place.

She's afraid of him because he tried to bite her when she picked him up. I explained that I think he has broken rib(s) and he wouldn't probably really bite her - he was just telling her that he was in pain and please put him down.

She's not refusing to listen to me - I think she just really doesn't know 'dog' at all. He's kind of more like a cat, but congenial.

He needs x-rays, he needs to be neutered, he probably needs to be dewormed and all that. She needs to make an investment in him, make a commitment. I think his timing is off, since her wedding is next month - and all her money and energy is going to that. But, he seems to need a home now.

What's his story?
